Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu, faculty of P. G. Department of Zoology and Principal Investigator or the Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources of S. D. College has been selected for the Special Award of the Bangalore based Sarojini Damodaran Foundation, for the year 2017-18 for his contributions in the field of environment and biodiversity conservation. The award consisting of a memento, cash award of Rs. Ten Thousand and certificate were presented to him Mrs. Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Chairperson of Pratheeksha Foundation, Bangalore and wife of Mr. Kris Gopalakreishanan (former CEO of Infosys) at a function organized in Muhamma, ALleppey on 11th March 2018. Mr. S. D. Shibulal, co-founder Infosys Technologies, Mrs. Kumari Shibulal, Patron of S-D Foundation and Prof. S. Ramanand, Trustee of the Foundation and Mr. J. Jayalal, President Kuhamma Panchayath were also present.
Dr. Prabhu has developed many rural technologies for the value addition of aquatic weeds like water hyacinth which creates major problems to the aquatic ecosystems of the country, especially in Kerala. He has also launched a Community Training Centre in the College to offer training to women entrepreneurs, public and students on value addition of the weeds. He is at present Chairman of Board of Studies of Biotechnology of University of Kerala and Member of the District Level Monitoring Community of “Sasthraposhini” scheme of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment. He is a recipient of about 20 different international, national and state level awards and fellowships and has successfully completed 7 externally funded research projects.
