The exhibits of the Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources, S. D. College, Alleppey has bagged the third prize at the Value addition for Income Generation in Agriculture (VAIGA 2018) & Krishi Unnathi Mela organized by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of Kerala during 27-30, December at Trichur. The award was presented by Agriculture Minister Mr. V. S. Sunil Kumar during the valedictory function held yesterday. There were more than 330 stalls in the international exhibition on agro-processing and value addition.
Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu, Associate Professor of Zoology and Principal Investigator of Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources of Sanatana Dharma College, Alappuzha had developed innovative technologies and products for the value addition of aquatic weeds like water hyacinth through his research for the last 20 years. He has developed many rural technologies for the preparation of value added products from aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth and has launched a Community Training Centre in the College which provides training to rural women, self help groups and others. He has also served a member of the Expert Committee constituted by the Govt. of Kerala to suggest methods for eradicating water hyacinth during 2009. Recently, a start-up called Ecoloop360 has been launched by three M. Tech. students of Govt. Engineering College, Barton Hill, Trivandrum under his mentorship to produce and market value added products from water hyacinth. These technologies were selected for Special Prizes at the Rural Innovators Meet of KSCSTE, Govt. of Kerala during 2014 and 2016.
Dr. Prabhu has a Ph. D in Biotechnology and did post doctoral research in USA and Germany. He had also served as Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Department of Biotechnology in Asian Institute of Medicine, Science & Technology, Malaysia. He has more than 23 years of teaching and research experience and is a recognized research guide of the University of Kerala. Currently he is serving as the Chairman, Board of Studies in Biotechnology of the University.
