One of the esteemed departments of Sanatana Dharma College, the Department of Chemistry was established in 1957. With a resourceful and committed bunch of faculty members, the department strives to offer an ideal teaching-learning environment to our student community. The department offers two major programmes: B.Sc. Chemistry and M.Sc. Chemistry. In 2013, the department has been recognized as a Research Centre by University of Kerala and active research has been carried out in the fields of polymer chemistry, nanomaterials, and other major research domains in chemistry. We also offers Complementary Programmes for B.Sc. courses in Physics, Botany, Zoology and Microbiology. Apart from organising academic seminars/conferences every year, we provide ample opportunities for students to interact with academicians, scientists, and industrialists through visits to various industries, R&D laboratories, and research institutes. Every year, department conducts a one-day workshop for higher secondary school students and teachers (ATCHSS). CHEMSAFE is a best practice of the department for providing awareness on lab safety measures for teachers, and lab assistants of neighbouring institutes. AURUMCHEM, the alumni association of the department, also supports the goals of the department and strengthens the ties between the alumni, the public, and the department. Eminent alumni including retired faculty members of the department have offered 4 endowments for recognising the academic talents of our students. Department also provides financial support to the needy students.

The Department organises chemistry seminars/conferences/workshops, cultural activities, festivals and also provides opportunity to visit various industries, laboratories, institutes etc. These activities provide ample opportunities for students to interact with the academicians and industrialists. The department takes keen interest to adapt new innovative techniques in learning and motivates students to inculcate research aptitude. In 2013, the Department is recognized as Research Center by University of Kerala and active research have been going on by providing chances for faculty members of nearby colleges to guide students for Ph.D Programmes. This creates the Department as a common platform for learning and updating the current trends in chemistry. Most of our Almni are well settled in various fields of the society like education, administration, public sectors, entrepreneurs and research.
