S. D. College has bagged the first prize in the State level Project Competition (SPARK) held at Trivandrum Mar Baselios College of Engineering & Technology during September 26-27, 2013. The team led by Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu of the Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources attached to the P. G. Department of Zoology & Research Centre of our College comprised of two P. G Students, Anoop Kumar V and Sreelakshmi. T. P. They were selected for the award from more than 300 applications after a 3-stage evaluation and completion spread over 10 months. The prize includes a Certificate, Memento and Cash award of Rs. 1.0 lakh to the college. The competition was organized by Mathrubhumi and Mar Baselios College of Engineering & Technology.
The students presented a project entitled “Eco-friendly technologies for utilizing aquatic weeds of Kerala”. They had developed several technologies which included the use of the common aquatic weeds such as Water Hyacinth and Salvinia for mushroom cultivation, preparation of modified biomass briquettes and production of industrially useful enzyme Cellulase. Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu is an award winning teacher-researcher who has been working towards finding appropriate solutions to the problems caused by the overgrowth of these troublesome weeds in the water bodies of Kerala.For details, contact 9495017901.
