First start-up from Sanatana Dharma College, Alleppey launched
The first start-up from Sanatana Dharma College, Alleppey was launched at a simple function organized on World Environment Day. Named as EichhoTech, the start-up venture by a team of enthusiastic researchers and students, aims to utilize the problematic aquatic weed Eichhornia crassipes (Water Hyacinth) for the manufacturing of diverse range of eco-friendly value added products. These products were developed by over 20 years of painstaking research conducted at the Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources led by its Principal Investigator, Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu.
The start-up Team Leader & CEO is Mr. Anoopkumar. V, a research scholar in the P. G. Department of Zoology and Research Centre where as the other members include Mr. Haree Krishna, Mr. Issac George and Ms. Arya. S, post graduate pass-outs from Zoology epartment. Other members will be included at a later stage. Dr. Prabhu will guide the team as its mentor and transfer the technologies to the start-up. The products range from biodegradable pots for indoor and outdoor plants, multi-purpose boards, pens, exclusive designer works of art, souvenirs etc. all from the troublesome plant. The team has already secured financial assistance, external mentoring and technical support from experts for three years through the Young Innovators Programme of the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council of the State Government.
The soft launch of the start-up was performed by Hon. Member of Parliament from Alleppey, Sri. A. M. Arif who unveiled a logo EichhoTech printed in a special canvas made from water hyacinth pulp. He was presented with a biodegradable pot with a chilly plant in it and his own digital photo printed on handmade paper from water hyacinth. Dr. P.R. Unnikrishna Pillai, Principal, S. D. College, Dr. T. R. Anil Kumar, Vice Principal, Dr. Meena Janardhanan, Head, Dept. of Zoology, Prof. R. Indulal, Member of the Academic Council of the University of Kerala, Dr. Cini Priyadarshini, Superintendent, ESI Hospital, Alleppey and Mr. Fen Antony, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Social Forestry Division, Alleppey, were the prominent attendees.
