The Research and PG Department of English, in association with the Literary and Drama Club of Sanatana Dharma College, Alappuzha, and Ayroor Kathakali Gramam, conducted a memorial lecture on Kafka’s 100th death anniversary on July 3, 2024. Dr. P. K. Rajasekharan, a renowned literary critic, orator in Malayalam literature, and Kerala Sahitya Akademi award winner, was the chief guest. He delivered a remarkable lecture on the topic of Western literary theories.
Arathy S, the Literary Club coordinator and Assistant Professor of the English Department, welcomed the gathering. This was followed by the presidential address by Dr. Devi S, Head of the English Department. The program was officially inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Prema K. H., Principal of SD College, . Felicitations were offered by Dr. Ajaykumar, Head of the Malayalam Department, and Dr. Jyothisree Balakrishnan, Coordinator of Clubs. V. R. Vimalraj, President of the Natyabharati Library in Ayroor Kathakali Gramam introduced the speaker.
Dr PK Rajasekharan enlightened the audience with his insights on Kafka and Western literary theories. He discussed Kafka’s life and works, including Metamorphosis and The Trial, and their engagement with literary theories. He also covered other literary works that adhere to or deviate from literary conventions, and addressed the decline in reading habits among the current generation.
The programme concluded with an interactive session moderated by Dr. Santhosh Babu, during which both teachers and students engaged in a lively discussion. Dr. Rajasekharan also shared his views on contemporary novels and writing styles. Lakshmi S, Assistant Professor of the English Department, proposed the vote of thanks. A captivating PowerPoint presentation was prepared by the MA students, along with poster and chart presentations by UG students.
