The department began functioning on 20 June 1946 with an undergraduate programme in Botany. Now, it has emerged as a research department affiliated to the University of Kerala with 5 teachers available for research supervision The department specialises in subjects such as: (1) Microbiology (2) Biotechnology (3) Genetics (4) Plant Physiology (5) Taxonomy (6) Phytobacteriology
The department conducts ongoing research projects in these areas in collaboration with government as well as commercial agencies. A highlight is the study of medicinal plants conducted for S. D. Pharmacy, Alappuzha.
