NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit at Sanatana Dharma College, Alappuzha, was initiated in 1971 with Dr. K. Keshavapanikkar as the Programme Officer. Through diverse social service activities, the NSS unit has been able to create a new model of community service.

The unparalleled efforts of the S.D. College NSS unit have received recognition from both the National Government and Kerala State Government. As part of their social commitment, the unit, along with its programme officers and volunteers, has received numerous awards. The NSS unit has been bestowed with the prestigious National Award for being the best NSS unit in the country for the year 2021-22 by the Central Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry. Also the NSS unit has received State Award for the Best NSS unit in 2005-06, 2017-18 and 2021-22.

Some of the notable projects:
i. Sanatanam : The first house constructed by the unit in 1993-94.

ii. Drug-Free Campus Campaign : Earned a special award from the University of Kerala.

iii. Sanatana Sumangali : Facilitated the marriage of two inmates from the Alappuzha Mahila Mandiram.

iv. Sanatana Bhavanam : Realized the dream of a house for a poor family in Mararikulam.

v. Jeevanam : Provided an auto-rickshaw to a person who lost his livelihood in an accident and suffered serious injuries.

vi. Sanatanalayam : Built a house for a poor family in the adopted village of Iravukadu Ward as part of the 50-house construction project during the NSS’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

vii. Prayanam : Donated a tricycle to a lottery vendor facing physical challenges.

viii. Ksheeravardhini : Donated a cow to a poor farming family as part of the college’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

ix. Punarjani : Constructed a house for an NSS member from a poor family.

x. Wetland conservation activities, COVID-19 prevention efforts, digital literacy campaigns, service activities at Ambalappuzha Sneha Veedu, care for bedridden patients, organic vegetable gardening, numerous blood donation camps, gender equality awareness campaigns, medical kit distributions, mobile challenges, and traffic awareness campaigns.

In the Silver Jubilee year of the S.D. College NSS unit, they released an audio cassette titled “Orumayude Sangeetham,” a collection of patriotic songs. The unit has actively participated in the Alappuzha Canal Renovation and the construction of Vijay Park. Representing the University of Kerala, the unit has been present at the Republic Day Camp in Delhi seven times, including the Platinum Jubilee year of S.D. College in 2022, and continues to be active in national and state leadership training camps.

From the award for the best NSS unit in the undivided University of Kerala in 1987-88 to over ten awards for the best NSS unit and over eight awards for the best program officer, the S.D. College NSS unit has achieved significant recognition.

In the Amrit Mahotsav year of India’s independence, during the Platinum Jubilee of S.D. College and the Golden Jubilee of the S.D. College NSS unit, the project “Sahayaanam” aims to declare Alappuzha district as India’s first complete Scheduled Caste Career Guidance district, under the leadership of the advisory committee chaired by Honorable Alappuzha MP Adv. A.M. Ariff.
